- Near Field Communication (NFC) is a contactless communication technology that operates over radio using a base frequency of 13.56 MHz with a typical range of up to 2 cm and a data rate of 46 kbit/s to 1.7 Mbps. In addition to data connections, NFC is unique in that one side can also transmit power over the connection, allowing for battery-free operation.

Operating Modes of NFC Cards
- Host Card Emulation In this setup, the NFC Controller forwards all received contactless commands to the Device Host, whereupon the HCE app can communicate with the contactless reader device via the NFC API.
- Wireless Charging mode – This mode is used for dedicated transfer of up to 1W of power over the NFC connection. Communication is performed to manage the power transfer. This mode will charge small devices with a limited power supply, such as a stylus, headset, fitness tracker, smartwatch, or other small consumer goods.
- Peer-to-peer configuration – To exchange data, two NFC Forum Devices are touched together. This mode can be used, for instance, to quickly establish a connection to transfer the music connection between two sets of speakers or to exchange contact details between device users.
- Card Emulation based on Secure Elements – In this mode, a secure component within the NFC Forum Device controls the contactless card emulation. The NFC Forum Device’s security chip or an NFC-enabled SIM card placed within the device can serve as this Secure Element. The commands from the contactless reader will be sent to the secure element for processing in both cases.
